"Ata ziatom meni'yome menye, deki erey showit lemlem"
This feeling of "oneness" was the energy that filled the room, as hundreds of Eritreans from all over the DFW metroplex came together to celebrate Eritrea's 22nd anniversary of Independence.
The evening began with a speech from President Isaias Afwerki and messages from the Eritrean Embassy. Following the messages, the women of the community, which included all age groups, started the celebration by coming into the venue with jubilation. Which showed their common bond of strength and reminded us in their actions that their involvement in the struggle was a vital part of what caused the delivery of our country's independence.
The children's annual performance once again amazed the crowds. The songs they performed to all aligned with the theme of Eritrea's Development as a nation but also no forgetting where it all began. Each song reaffirmed our reoccurring theme "lomi embaba nay tsbah fere" yet went on to assure the parents of the community that they are here to preserve and take on the hidri. The legacy of Eritrean history bestowed upon them by the many who sacrificed for our Independence.
Following the performances was the transition ceremony for the graduating HIDRI members who will be moving on into YPFDJ Dallas. These members have learned and understood the core values that HIDRI strives to teach and are prepared and determined to continue their journey as becoming YPFDJ members. These new members along with the current YPFDJ members looked on at the cutting of the cake by some of Dallas Fort Worth's respectable Tegadelaye and Hamadie members.
HIDRI Dallas was thankful for all the support of their "I'm Eritrean and I own It" fundraiser shirts which flew off the tables. The proceeds of the shirts assisted them with raising funds for their local initiatives like the Big Brother Big Sister Mentor Program and much more.
The evening was complete, because the Eritrean community of Dallas came together in unification, to remember those who gave their life, family, and future in the fight for a country their people could call their own. Now in age of adversity, Eritreans must continue to come together to help build and maintain a strong prosperous, and healthy Eritrea. The independence celebration was an indication that the Eritrean people will forever be humbled by those who fought for freedom, and will honor them by continuing to remember their hidri, promise of the recipient of a legacy bestowed upon it by the Eritrean martyrs.
This year’s festivities were a success due to the hard work of members from PFDJ, YPFDJ, HIDRI, Hamade, as well as the United Eritrean-American Families of Dallas. The night could not have been possible without the cooperation of all the parents, children, and volunteers from the community who contributed their time and effort into making this event possible.
On behalf of HIDRI Dallas, we would like to thank everyone for joining us at the event and for your continued support.
